Shop Carefully for RV Air
Conditioners
Some of the most beautiful and pleasant places to travel in a recreational vehicle are unfortunately also some of the hottest, so whether you are planning to buy or rent an RV, don't forget that it will be more comfortable with an air conditioner.
Even if the A/C unit in your RV only needs replacing, here are some of the most popular ones for you to consider. Carrier, Coleman and Maxxair are probably the most common brand names to look for and are made to cool down boats as well as RVs.
Coleman 8333 13.5BTU RV Air Conditioner lists for $724 but we've seen it discounted to $540. It delivers 13,500 BTUs of cooling power and mounts on the roof. Shipping weight is 100 lbs. And remember, every 100 pounds of weight you add to your RV means that its fuel economy will be reduced a little bit more.
The Coleman 8335 Mach 15 Air Conditioner retails at $849 and we have recently seen it for sale priced at $679. This is a more powerful unit at 15,000 BTUs if you are looking to cool down a larger vehicle.
Carrier makes quite similar units that can be had for a bit less money. The Carrier AIR V 13500 BTU air conditioner that comes complete with ceiling assembly has been seen advertised online at a popular auction website for only $429. Similarly the 15,000 BTU unit is going for $499. Of course, if you are buying it from someplace far away, you may also have to have to pay a fairly hefty shipping charge if you are not careful about shopping around and making careful comparisons.
One thing we noticed about the carrier is that it features what they call "slinger wheel" technology that results in less runoff. Air flow is improved with ducts that oscillate, the filters are easy to clean and you do not need to be an expert mechanic to do the installation yourself. One more thing is the weight of only around 90 pounds is lighter than Coleman.
