Cheap Swamp Coolers

Get Cool For Less With Cheap Swamp Coolers

Working by the principal that when water evaporates its temperature gets lower, a swamp cooler is also known as an evap cooler. There is quite a range of evaporative coolers on the market, ranging from cheap to a major investment.

The way swamp coolers work is when dripping pads are kept moist with a water pump. When hot dry outside air blows over the pads, the water evaporates and the air temperature goes down. These coolers work best in areas of dry heat like Arizona, and not as well as Florida where the heat tends to be a lot more humid. A swamp cooler only uses about 25% as much power as an air conditioner, so they are much more economical to operate.

We were surprised to learn there are industrial strength swamp coolers designed to provide high-efficiency cooling when the standard air conditioning system of a plant is out of order. A 36-inch, Air Mover Hazardous Location Evaporative Cooler from Port-A-Cool that cools up to 2,500 square feet sells for $7,695.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Unistar 4-in-1 Swamp Cooler with Ionic Air Purifier, DF268 from Kaito. It lists for $149 but we have found on sale for $89.95. Weighing 18 pounds, its four functions are fan, air cooler, humidifier and ionizer. The water capacity is 2-gallons, and it features a three-speed fan that can oscillate optionally. In the same price range and with similar features is the SPT SF-613 LED Evaporative Air Cooler with Ionizer.

If you have a bit of a budget, you can get a good quality Mastercool Model# MMB10 evaporative cooler at Wal-Mart for about $268.

Pardon the pun, but we found a very cool way to air condition your car without real A/C and that is a cheap swamp cooler that plugs into your cigarette lighter and sells new for just $39.95. The catch is that it fits into a standard size Coleman or Igloo cooler, which you have to provide. Great for your RV, tent, boat or car, it blows out air that has been cooled down to a comfortable 50 degrees.
